Noodles, Nimbu Paani & A Nice Guy

“Hi! I am Milan”

Asha shook hands with the guy and stuttered, “I’m Asha” and managed a weak attempt at smiling.

“Please, please sit. Can I get you some water, something to drink?”

Asha shook her head, giving Milan a no for an answer.

As she sat down, she wondered, Milan ehh, how come nobody told her. The waiter brought the menu cards and Milan was engrossed in it.  She knew what she would order and waited for him to pick his dish, meanwhile she sized him up. For a malayali guy, he was above average in looks, bordered on being handsome, tall, wheatish complexion, a lean face with a sharp nose.

He glanced up to look for the waiter, instead caught her looking, maybe even staring at him. Asha quickly looked away and there was the faint trace of a blush on her cheeks. He smiled and called for the waiter. When the guy came to get their order, Milan indicated Asha to go ahead and she promptly ordered egg noodles. Milan looked surprised and told the waiter," Make it two and also one gobi manchurian please."

Why does this man say please for everything, but then it doesn’t sound like he is making it up. Is he a good actor or is he like this always? Her mind was incessantly asking a hundred questions and she was struggling to keep a straight face. She’d come prepared for this, the question that all men inevitably begin a conversation with – ‘so, tell me about yourself’, she had already thought out what and how she would answer this. But why isn’t he asking me anything!
As soon as the waiter left them alone again, he looked at Asha and asked,” How come you are early? I thought we had fixed the time for 1.00” with a cute boyish smile.

Uh oh. Now what. What would she say? Make something up or just tell him the truth? Her mind suddenly told her that if she was early, so was he.

“It looked like you  reached earlier than me.”

“Well, to be honest, I didn’t want to make you wait for me in case you happened to come early.”

That struck a chord in her - only her dad used to do that to her. If she asked him to pick her up at 5.30, he would ensure that he reached well before 5.15 and wait for her, just in case she wants to leave early, but cannot because her dad is not there. She had always found the gesture sweet and frankly did not expect anyone else to be like that. But here this guy is; what does he think of himself, of me, what does he want of me, does he really see a future with me, her mind started questioning again.

“Ma’am, would you want to order a drink?”

The waiter was back and was interrupting her thoughts, talk about timing! Without thinking anything more or even glancing at the menu, she asked for a nimbu paani so that she could return to the comfortable realm of her mind; but then she remembered, she was here to make conversation with another person, not with her own mind.

“So Milan, tell me something about yourself, what do you do for a living?”

“I thought you’d never ask” he seemed excited to talk about his job, “I am into advertising and we deal with some of the big brands back in the US. It is such a different market when compared to India and us a very exciting place to live in.”

“Oh, you do seem to like your job a lot.”

“Like? I love it!!”

Would you let me do the work I love, in case we decide to get married? As if overhearing her conversation with herself, he continued, “You know, I believe every individual who is put on this earth has a particular purpose, a particular calling. You need to find out what it is, and pursue it no matter what. If you don’t chase your dreams, who else will?”

Wow. I like the way his mind works. Does he really think like this, or is he just trying to talk big big things to try to impress me? Her mind was churning out questions after questions. If only it would just shut and listen, if only it would her peace for some time and let her be 100% in this conversation with this guy.

The waiter came over with the steaming food and two chilled glasses of fresh lime juice.

Girls in India are caught in the drift when they reach a particular age. They suddenly face a dilemma as to what to focus on in their life, whether to make a career and ensure a living or to get married and secure their life. Girls who remain single after the so called marriageable age are frowned upon by the society and are considered a burden for their families.

Throughout the month of April, thanks to the AtoZ Challenge, I am trying to portray the life of Asha, a common Indian girl with dreams and aspirations. Everyday we focus on one alphabet starting from A on April 1st till Z on April 30th. Stick with me till the end of the journey and do tell me what you think of my writing and my Asha.

Online?

She smiled as she read the chat. ‘Online?’ Just one word, yet, it made her smile. While typing out a yes, she wondered whether or not to add a smiley to go along with it… whether just the yes would sound rude to this overtly polite guy, or would the smiley give him an impression that she was anxiously waiting for his message. She chided herself for not having been active in the dating game in her younger days so she would know the nuances on how to, what to and what not to by now. To her dismay, he found Milan to be a very nice guy, who spoke and behaved well, she felt quite comfortable around him. After lunch, they went to the nearby park and from there chose to walk back till her apartment. On their way back, Milan asked her if she enjoyed the afternoon with him, though she answered a simple ‘it was fine’, her smile revealed a lot more and he caught the twinkle in her eyes and smiled back. That cute boyish grin, again. Something happened to her when he smiled at ...

Quiet Conversations

It was going on for quite a few weeks now. The lady and her husband were always talking in hushed tones, alert and looking around to ensure no one was eavesdropping. Being tiny has its own benefit; I can hide safely behind the lady’s thick curtains and listen. The quiet conversations between the kind lady and her rude husband had increased ever since they had brought in that gagged little girl. Will she join with the rest of us slaves or be sold off to that bearded man who had come to look at her when they brought her home? This post is in response to Corinne's prompt at  Everyday Gyaan  for the 100 Words on Saturday blog hop she is hosting.

The early morning sun rays kissed her good morning, and she woke up with a smile. Something told her it was going to be a beautiful day. She finished her early morning tasks and offered prayers and thanks to her Lord. Her mum and dad had called promptly in the morning to ask how the meeting went, whether she has taken a decision about Milan, what food she had ordered, her mother hoped she had worn a ‘decent’ dress and asked her again if she made a good impression on him. Frankly, Asha had no clue how to answer to all these queries. She said that they had a good time together, had lunch and an interesting conversation on their way back. Her mother sounded excited when she told her that Milan had come to drop her back home. She could almost imagine her mom’s eyebrows arching up in excitement. It was then that her mom asked her, “So, did you like him?” Now that, was a difficult question. She liked him, yes. But what her mom wanted to know was not whether she liked him or no...
