Cherubs From Heaven

Whenever she thought about her impending marriage (to some guy she was yet to meet) she couldn’t but resist thinking what the guy would say about what she had planned about her children. She was sure no typical Indian male or his family would support her thoughts and dreams.

She didn’t want children.

Well, it was not that simple either. Asha didn’t want biological children; but she would love to adopt. In fact her most cherished dream when she was still pursuing her graduation was that she would find a good job with a high profile newspaper and move on to adopt three children and settle down with them in a cozy home in the national capital. The dream was constantly eluding her and now it almost looked impossible to her. Her parents were pestering her relentlessly to settle down with a good guy who belonged to their religion and caste; she couldn’t oppose to her parents choosing a groom for her since she was not in any other relationship.

She wondered what would become of her dreams, hopes and ambitions; she remembered her friend Shreya who had to quit college because the grooms family did not like their bahu (daughter in law) to become a journalist and appear on newspapers or TV channels creating controversies. Would I too have to forgo my dreams, would I too be silenced forever, wondered Asha.

Girls in India are caught in the drift when they reach a particular age. They suddenly face a dilemma as to what to focus on in their life, whether to make a career and ensure a living or to get married and secure their life. Girls who remain single after the so called marriageable age are frowned upon by the society and are considered a burden for their families.

Throughout the month of April, thanks to the AtoZ Challenge, I am trying to portray the life of Asha, a common Indian girl with dreams and aspirations. Everyday we focus on one alphabet starting from A on April 1st till Z on April 30th. Stick with me till the end of the journey and do tell me what you think of my writing and my Asha.

Timeless Tableau, A Twist in The Tale

The dinner with her parents went exceptionally well, especially with the surprise they had given her. Her mother came into the room with a steaming cup of coffee, just the way Asha loved. She knew from the aroma wafting from the dining room that her mom had not only settled down and made herself comfortable, she had taken over the kitchen duties and had already prepared a yummy breakfast. The news that her parents would be staying a while with her was by far one of the most pleasant surprises she had received in a long while.

A Fistful of Rose Petals

“Maaaaaaaa! Gueshh what I got” my little birdie chirped in her ever pleasing sing song voice. “Hmm.. what is it baby?” “Gueshh naaaa…” the birdie’s voice is gaining frequency the minute. She is every bit her father’s daughter – loving, raucous and edgy. Looking up at her from the book I am reading, see that her tiny little hand is all balled up into a tight fist and is outstretched towards me. “Is it a button?” She loves picking up these things from wherever she can. “No” “Hmm.. is it a marble?” “No…” “Then is it..’” “Never mind maa, I will show you” and she opens up her fist with a broad smile to show these precious petals from a rose flower, blood red in colour. I am at a loss at what to tell her. Do I tell her that a plant is a living being, and that she is not supposed to hurt another living thing? But how could - I - who kills cockroaches and mosquitoes, eats non vegetarian food – tell my daughter that it is wrong hurt another living be...

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

The sun rose like every other day, its rays orange and warm kissed her awake; the coffee her mom made was sweet; the bouquet of roses that came in still had thorns one of which pricked her; birds were singing but sounded nowhere close to violins playing; why then did they call this love? Asha smiled as she went on with her daily chores. Today was a big day for her, beyond doubts, but she knew it would be a bigger day for Milan – the day his dreams would start coming true, the day she would officially walk into his life, as his fiancĂ©.
