The Blue Doorway

This blue doorway was her favourite. It was in front of these very same doors he went down on one knee- like the typical hero in her romance novels, and asked her if she would marry him. He seemed least bothered about the onlookers gawking at them from every window, and across the street.

They had been friends for a long time, but this twist in the tale was something she had not expected. Surprised, and unable to breathe out of anxiety, she had nodded her head in the affirmative.

She would want to be his wife – and best friend for life. She would manage her family, and she already knew his family would welcome her with open arms.

Why would her parents stand in her way, after all, all they wanted, was her happiness right.

The doors of her own home would be painted this very shade of blue, to remind both of them of the past events, to ensure there would be love in their house till eternity.

Dark Secret

To say the least, my parents rejected and disowned me when they came to know how I really am. It is not by my free will that I lead a life like this, hiding from the society, never going home, always afraid of being ridiculed or mocked at. Similarly, it is not my fault that I’m like this; this is not a choice I have made.

Quiet Conversations

It was going on for quite a few weeks now. The lady and her husband were always talking in hushed tones, alert and looking around to ensure no one was eavesdropping. Being tiny has its own benefit; I can hide safely behind the lady’s thick curtains and listen. The quiet conversations between the kind lady and her rude husband had increased ever since they had brought in that gagged little girl. Will she join with the rest of us slaves or be sold off to that bearded man who had come to look at her when they brought her home? Cherubs From Heaven

Whenever she thought about her impending marriage (to some guy she was yet to meet) she couldn’t but resist thinking what the guy would say about what she had planned about her children. She was sure no typical Indian male or his family would support her thoughts and dreams.   She didn’t want children. Well, it was not that simple either. Asha didn’t want biological children; but she would love to adopt. In fact her most cherished dream when she was still pursuing her graduation was that she would find a good job with a high profile newspaper and move on to adopt three children and settle down with them in a cozy home in the national capital. The dream was constantly eluding her and now it almost looked impossible to her. Her parents were pestering her relentlessly to settle down with a good guy who belonged to their religion and caste; she couldn’t oppose to her parents choosing a groom for her since she was not in any other relationship. She wondered what would b...
